I have to imagine that it must have started as some bad joke which then just spiraled out of hand. I hate 'Viva Las Vegas' with a passion, I think it is totally embarrassing. Jumping back into the thread just in time to catch the band at their absolute nadir. Could Terry Manning's involvement been a reason for that? Recycler is a step up from Afterburner, for me. I like it, but would I return to it often? Probably not. The music is OK, but not enough to make up for the silly lyrics.Дoubleback: Good song with production style similar to My Head's in Mississippi and Give It Up. Give it Up: Sounds more like it's in Head's in Mississippi in style, so weird to have Decision or Collision in between these two tracks.Дў000 Blues: I should love this, but it seems a little phoned in.Д«urger Man: Oh, a ZZ Top song that's about gettin' it on.

Busy production, too much robo-percussion. A good one, but donвЂ™t think it stands up to the 1970s top tracks.Дecision Or Collision: and now we are back to sounding like Afterburner. The boogie groove is back in a big way, although still augmented by robots. My Head's in Mississippi: I remember this one as a highlight. Tell it: Good, but didnвЂ™t really leave an impression.

The вЂњdrumsвЂќ right after the guitar solo sounded very artificial, even though itвЂ™s a part Frank could totally have played himself. I do like BillyвЂ™s vocals on this one, though. Penthouse Eyes вЂ“ Starts with Sharp Dressed man-esque spoken line вЂњWhat you looking at, girl?вЂќ and sounds more like Afterburner production style. Lovething: Not bad, but not sure what else I can say. Guitar does seem to be more to the forefront, as it should be. I do remember it (Much like Afterburner, I haven't listened to this album in many years). That schizophrenia makes for a weird listen.Д¬oncrete and Steel вЂ“ This is a good one. Part of this album might as well be Afterburner songs, while close to half show some progression/regression back to being a Rock band.

The liner notes also explain that Billy played the lead (which is full of вЂњsquankyвЂќ sounds) on a Fender Jaguar.ДЄnd now, for what you've all been waiting for, my review of Recycler:ДЇunny that this is the album they named Recycler, because that's a more fitting title for the Afterburner album. Either way, the lyrics are pretty silly, but overall I like the song. The one with the title I managed to dig up is one by Smiley Lewis (written by Dave Bartholomew).

All in all, the song reminds me of the Rolling Stones a bit.ДЄccording to the liner notes this is based on a song by Jimmy Reed called 'Real Gone Lover' but I'm not finding that song. I really like the piano - a new facet for the band. Dusty changed the timing and stress of the вЂњone-arm banditsвЂќ, and the line вЂњIf you see it once, youвЂ™ll never be the same againвЂќ was changed to вЂњ.youвЂ™ll never come home againвЂќ.ДЄside from the gimmicky female sighs on the intro, this is the most stripped down and earthy song ZZ Top have done in over a decade, and points at the next couple of albums. Also worth noting that there are some changes compared to the original: Where ElvisвЂ™ version was fast and jaunty, ZZвЂ™s version is more sludgy. And Billy plays some great solos over the course of the song. I like DustyвЂ™s Elvis impression even if itвЂ™s a bit lower than his usual vocals. The electronics are even more pronounced on the eight-minute remix. It doesnвЂ™t sound like Frank in fact when they play the song live, Frank changes the patterns so he can play them (the same happened on вЂњLovethingвЂќ from Recycler). IвЂ™ve long tried to make sense of the drums - if they are real, they were not only triggered, but also extensively quantized. Everything is full of bleeps - I guess it makes conceptual sense, as it conjures up blinking gambling machines and a city full of temptations. Oddly, after the band was reducing the synths on Recycler, this one-off shows them ramping up the electronic element again. The original version starts with a little sample of Elvis himself saying 'Y'all still wants me to come with you' (or something like that), the Rancho Texicano version edits this out but still has the same length! The second Elvis Presley cover after 'Jailhouse Rock' way back on Fandango!, this was ZZ Top's last big hit single.
